According to a recent survey of almost 10,000 consumers commissioned by the National Retail Federation, fewer people are using credit cards for this year’s Holiday shopping. 30.9 percent said they used credit cards compared to 33.8 percent last year, an almost 10 percent decrease from 2008. Women used credit cards less than men, with 29.1 percent of women paying for Holiday purchases with credit cards versus 32.8 percent of men.

According to recent reports a number of credit card providers in the UK have been pushing up the rates charged on their cards in time for the Christmas period, with some pushing up rates by as much as 7 percent.
Capital One is one of the credit card firms to have made this move, and has tried to defend its actions by stating that the reasoning behind the interest rate hikes is to reflect the higher risk of some customers combined with current market conditions.
Officials have said that some consumers could end up paying a massive 40 percent interest on their Christmas purchases if they use these high interest cards unless they are able to pay off the balance in full before interest starts being charged.

We’ve heard plenty over the past few months regarding unfair credit card practices, but it seems more fees have surfaced causing consumers greater financial despair. According to a new report from Durham, N.C.-based Center for Responsible Lending, credit card companies are imposing deceptive fees and hidden charges to sidestep new consumer regulations.
