Plastic cards such as credit and debit cards have become increasingly popular over recent years, with many consumers realising that plastic offers a convenience, fast, and flexible way to make payments for purchases, and means that they do not have to cope with the risk and hassle of carrying around cash or using cheque books to make payment for their purchases.

Many consumers have multiple credit cards in addition to their debit card, and use cards to pay for pretty much everything they buy.

However, whilst plastic cards are popular across the board a recent report has suggested that there is something of a geographical divide when it comes to the popularity of plastic payment cards. The study was carried out by the UK Payments Council, and the results from the study showed that those in the south east of the country are more likely to be armed with plastic payment cards, whereas those in the West Midlands are least likely to have plastic payment cards.

The figures showed that in the south east of the country around 97 percent of Brits are in possession of a plastic payment card whereas in the West Midlands this figure falls to 86 percent. Overall the study showed that around 95 percent of Brits in the south of the country have plastic payment cards whereas in the north of the country around 91 percent of consumers have plastic payment cards. The south ease of the country was found to have the highest proportion of credit card holders and the lowest proportion was found in Yorkshire and the Humber.

A spokesperson from the UK Payments Council stated: “This research, on the whole, confirms long-standing trends: increasing reliance on debit and credit cards and phone or internet banking, and a noticeable decline in use of cheques.”
