Equifax: More new credit cards being issued

The total number of new bank-issued credit cards issued in May 2011 grew on an annual basis, according to a recent report from Equifax.

From May 2010 to May 2011, the total number of new bank-issued credit cards grew 27 percent, Equifax said. During the time frame of January 2011 through May 2011, nearly 15 million new credit cards were issued, which represents the highest mark in 3 years.

Despite the fact that this is a 3-year high, though, this 15-million mark is still well below the total of 28.5 million new credit cards that originated in the time frame of January 2007 through May 2007 – before the recession.

“The rebound we are seeing in total new bankcard originations certainly provides some level of positive traction in the industry, but it should also be noted that we still have a long way to go to achieve a true return to normalcy for the market,” Michael Koukounas, Senior Vice President – Special Client Services for Equifax, said in a statement.
